Using Pointd Pal

Every command, in one place. Your workspace may call points something else; the commands work the same way.

Giving recognition

@name ++ for <reason>
Give someone a point. The reason is optional. "because", "thanks for" and "since" work too.
{@name1, @name2} ++ for <reason>
Give a point to everyone listed.
@group ++ for <reason>
Give a point to everyone in a Slack user group.
@name :clap:@name :thumbsup:@name :+1:
The same as ++, skin tones included.
@name <your point emoji>
The same as ++, with your workspace's own emoji, like @name :gold-star: for being amazing. Repeating it still gives one point.
#value in the reason
Link the recognition to one of your company values, like #ownership.
/recognize/plusplus
Open a form to pick people, write a reason and pick one of your company values. Both commands open the same form.
Recognize someone
The same form, from the button at the top of the Pointd Pal tab (App Home).
Keep it private
Tick Keep it private in the form, or give in a DM with Pointd Pal. Nothing is posted in the channel: they get a DM, and only they, you and your admins can see the reason. It still counts toward their score.
Recognize this
On any message, open its menu and pick this shortcut. The form opens with the message's author picked and a link to the message in the reason.
React with the point emoji
Give the message's author a point. Remove the reaction to take it back.
Add a reason
Gave a point without a reason? Pointd Pal offers, only to you, to add one within the next 24 hours, with a value if you like. Pick Don't ask again to stop the offers.
Say thanks
If your workspace turns on thanks suggestions, a message like "thanks @name for the review" gets you a private offer to make it a point, at most once a day. Pick Give to send it with your message as the reason, or Don't suggest again to stop the offers. Nothing is kept unless you give.

Your data

Send these to Pointd Pal in a direct message, or mention it in a channel. The answer always comes privately.

opt in
Come back after opting out.
mute
Stop DMs and private tips you didn't ask for, like the offer to add a reason. You still hear back when you do something, like redeeming a reward.

Be celebrated on your birthday and work anniversary, or not. Your dates stay saved.
birthday <month> <day>
Set your birthday, without a year: birthday March 4. Use birthday clear to remove it.
start date <yyyy-mm-dd>
Set the date you started: start date 2021-06-01. Use start date clear to remove it.
export me
Get a file of everything Pointd Pal holds about you.
erase me
Delete your recognitions and clear your profile, after you confirm.
feedback <your note>
Tell the people who build Pointd Pal what you think. It goes without your name; to let them reply, use Send feedback on the Pointd Pal tab and tick the box.

Programs

Admins and moderators run nomination and award programs from the admin panel.

/plusplus nominate
Nominate someone in a program that's open for nominations. They aren't told, and voters read your story without your name on it.
Vote
On the program's announcement, or the Pointd Pal tab. Votes are secret, and you can change yours until voting closes.
/plusplus award
For the people a program lets give awards: pick someone, how many points and why. The award is posted in the channel.

For admins

@PointdPal erase @name <reason>
Admins only. Remove someone's recognitions; the reason is optional. The action is recorded in the audit log.

The Pointd Pal tab

Open Pointd Pal in Slack's sidebar to see its Home tab. It shows:

  • your points, the points you've given, and how many you have left to give, with any boost running
  • your balance, the rewards you can redeem, and the status of your requests
  • the programs open to you: nominations, ballots to vote on, and awards you can give
  • your birthday and work anniversary, and whether you want them celebrated
  • your Pointd Pal day: the anniversary of the first time you were recognized
  • Your preferences: switches to opt out or back in, mute or unmute DMs, turn the offers to add a reason or make your thanks a point on or off, and, once your workspace has an office screen, show or hide your name on it
  • a Send feedback button

Admins also see a setup list that ticks itself off as the workspace gets going, and an Open admin panel button.

Workspace settings

Workspace admins and owners, and anyone they give access to, sign in to the admin panel with Slack. From there they can change:

  • what points are called and their emoji
  • the giving allowance: how many points each person can give a day, week or month, or no limit
  • how long before the same giver can recognize the same person again
  • whether reacting with the point emoji gives a point, and whether the bot confirms with a reply or a reaction
  • whether Pointd Pal offers to add a reason after a recognition that has none (on by default)
  • whether Pointd Pal suggests a point when someone writes thanks to a teammate (off by default)
  • company values
  • the rewards catalog, and the queue of redemptions to approve and mark fulfilled
  • the weekly digest's channel and schedule
  • birthdays and work anniversaries, the channel they're posted in, and a CSV import of dates
  • the workspace time zone
  • who else can sign in to the admin panel: as an admin, or as a moderator who runs programs and gives awards
  • teams and their leads, and whether leads get a note about teammates who haven't been thanked lately
  • nomination and award programs, and boosts to the giving allowance (more about programs)
  • a link to your company's formal recognition program, suggested after someone gives the same person many points
  • negative points, bottom leaderboards and reposting every recognition to a channel, which are all off by default
  • on the Business plan, single sign-on through your identity provider, with your email domain verified by a DNS record, and API keys and webhooks for your own systems (more about the API and webhooks)

The panel also has the dashboard, inclusivity analytics, people, recognitions, exports, the audit log, billing, and the option to delete the workspace's data. More about the admin panel.
